The Mobile AI Value Map
Ten commercial AI opportunities that deserve operator management attention.
There is no universal AI priority list for every MNO and MVNO.
Network ownership, wholesale economics, customer scale, channel mix, data maturity, operating model and technology estate all change the answer.
The Council applies four editorial tests:
- 01Potential recurring EBITDA or contribution effect.
- 02Feasibility and controllability.
- 03Likely time to value.
- 04Quality of available evidence.
The order below is an editorial framework—not a universal ROI forecast.
MVNO commercial proof strip
Wholesale margin
Usage, entitlements, roaming, charging and wholesale agreements directly affect contribution.
Churn & CVM
Retention matters only where the retained customer creates incremental value.
Acquisition economics
CAC, channel efficiency, onboarding and customer quality can determine whether subscriber growth is economically attractive.
Cost-to-serve
Service automation must improve resolution economics—not simply transfer work or frustrate customers.
The MVNO question is not simply “Where can we use AI?” It is “Where can AI change unit economics while preserving commercial control?”
- 01
AI Customer Value, Churn & Next-Best-Action
- Value mechanism
- retained contribution, higher customer lifetime value, better campaign efficiency and more relevant intervention.
- Best fit
- MNOs and MVNOs.
- Management question
- Can the operator improve incremental customer contribution rather than simply create more propensity scores and campaigns?
- Evidence to examine
- Vodafone reported AI-powered customer-value management live across its European markets and an 85% reduction in campaign-analysis time. That is an operator-reported result, not a transferable benchmark or promise of equivalent impact elsewhere.Source: Vodafone FY26 results presentation (operator-reported)
- 02
Wholesale Rate Card & Margin Assurance
- Value mechanism
- protect contribution by identifying where usage, product entitlements, roaming and host-network charging diverge from expected wholesale economics.
- Best fit
- particularly MVNOs.
- Management question
- Can an operator detect emerging margin leakage early enough to act?
- Execution principle
- use AI for reconciliation, forecasting and controlled decision support; do not default to uncontrolled autonomous changes in customer treatment.
- 03
Customer Service, Self-Service & Agent Assist
- Value mechanism
- lower cost-to-serve, faster resolution, reduced repeat contact and better customer experience.
- Best fit
- MNOs and MVNOs.
- Management question
- Which interactions can genuinely be resolved end to end, and where does a human need better information?
- Evidence to examine
- Vodafone's FY26 presentation reported SuperTOBi live across its European markets, with more than 70% end-to-end resolution and an eight-percentage-point NPS improvement. These are Vodafone-reported outcomes and should not be treated as universal benchmarks.Source: Vodafone FY26 results presentation (operator-reported)
- 04
Fraud Detection & Revenue Assurance
- Value mechanism
- prevent revenue leakage, fraudulent consumption and unnecessary wholesale or service cost.
- Best fit
- MNOs and MVNOs.
- Management question
- Can AI shorten the interval between anomalous activity and economically useful intervention without unacceptable false positives?
- 05
Tariff, Bundle & Personalised Offer Optimisation
- Value mechanism
- improved yield, product take-up, customer relevance and contribution per subscriber.
- Best fit
- MNOs and MVNOs.
- Management question
- Can the operator improve offer economics while preserving customer fairness, compliance and management control?
- 06
Acquisition & Media Economics
- Value mechanism
- lower effective CAC, improved conversion, better channel allocation and stronger lifetime-value/CAC economics.
- Best fit
- particularly digital MVNOs and challenger brands, but relevant to MNOs.
- Management question
- Is AI creating incremental profitable acquisition—or simply automating more marketing activity?
- 07
ARPU, Bundle & Value-Added-Service Optimisation
- Value mechanism
- increased share of wallet and contribution through relevant bundles, cross-sell and value-added services.
- Management question
- Which recommendations change behaviour enough to create incremental value rather than moving revenue between existing products?
- 08
Network Capacity, Quality & Energy Optimisation
- Value mechanism
- reduced operating cost, better service quality and more efficient network capital.
- Best fit
- primarily network-owning MNOs.
- Management question
- Where can AI improve operating economics while preserving resilience and operational control?
- 09
Wholesale Settlement, CDR Audit & Billing Dispute
- Value mechanism
- fewer settlement errors, avoided overpayment, faster dispute identification and reduced reconciliation effort.
- Best fit
- particularly MVNOs and operators with complex wholesale arrangements.
- Management question
- Can AI improve reconciliation speed and accuracy while preserving auditable financial controls?
- 10
B2B IoT SIM Lifecycle & Account Optimisation
- Value mechanism
- lower support effort, better utilisation, fewer avoidable connectivity failures and improved economics across connected-device estates.
- Management question
- Which lifecycle decisions can safely be automated at scale and where should human commercial control remain?
AI value rarely comes from the model alone.
It comes from the combination of a commercially important problem, usable data, a redesigned workflow, appropriate decision rights, operational adoption and measurement capable of identifying genuine incremental value.
That is why the Council is organised around Evidence, Economics, Execution and Exchange.
